Complete Packaging Systems is a Top 3 Finalist!

Each year the Whitby Chamber of Commerce celebrates excellence in their business community. The Peter Perry Business Achievement Award is given to businesses that have made significant contributions to the fabric of the Town of Whitby over a period of five years or more.

Complete Packaging Systems has worked hard to contribute to our society. We believe that companies have an important responsibility to give back to the community. At CPS, we regularly engage in charitable donations and volunteer work for various not-for-profit organizations. Most recently, our company hosted a summer food drive to help Feed the Need in Durham. We joined our efforts with other companies throughout the Durham Region to Dress Down to Feed the Need on Friday’s throughout the month of August 2015. CPS donated a grand total of 157 lbs of non-perishable foods!

Earlier this summer we were also given a special chance to show our support for our community by sending a child to Camp Oochigeas for 1 full week! ThisLogo camp has unique opportunities for growth through challenging, fun, enriching and magical experiences. Camp Oochigeas is a privately funded, volunteer-based organization that provides kids with and affected by cancer the opportunity to experience camp life. We have a special bond with Camp Oochigeas–last year we were able to actually go and visit the camp to help set them up for camping season. It warms our hearts to know how much hard work and love goes into making a child’s life a little brighter.

It is our dedication as a community member that has strengthened our work environment and we are grateful to have the chance to do our part. It is an honour to be chosen as a finalist for this award and we thank the Whitby Chamber of Commerce for this wonderful opportunity. The awards will be presented to the winning recipients at the annual Peter Perry and Business Achievement Awards gala on Thursday, November 19.

Safety in the Workplace

It is important for employees to feel safe in their work environment. In a recent article from Pulp and Paper Canada, Steve Pelletier of St. Felicien Kraft pulp mill and Jean-Francios Nadeau of Vaudreuil Works chemical plant share how they keep their employees safe. St. Felicien’s encourage the mantra “no injury, no pain” while Vaudreuil Work strives for a “Zero Harm” environment.

say no harmAfter being purchased by Resolute in 2012, St. Felicien has markedly improved their safety record.  Frontline supervisors were receiving proper training and disciplinary actions were taken when employees failed to meet safety protocols. Before Resolute implemented its culture change, hundreds of first aid incidents occurred every year and now the company has a recordable incident rate of less than one!

But it’s not just about preparing for injury’s, it’s about predicting them and now safety teams are focusing on near misses and possible dangers. With this new focus, employees are now being equipped with better safety gear including full body protection when handling chemicals. At Vaudreuil Works, chemical burns are also a big concern, but with safety plans of their own, they had only two recordable incidences within the last year.

According to Vaudreuil Works, to prevent a catastrophic event it is important to plan ahead, identify what is critical at your plant and audit the emergency procedures every week. It is important to be diligent because your employee’s lives are depending on it.  Once you identify what type of catastrophic risks could occur, you can identify the resolution.

Whether the risk is small or large makes no difference, the importance is the safety of all employees. By taking the proper precautions in ensuring your cargo loads are properly secure, you can save yourself and others from harms way. We at Complete packaging can help you with our Load consultations in order to prevent damage and improve your safety.  Be sure to follow routine and be aware of the dangers around you, it could save a life and maybe even your own.

Success at the 2015 AAR Damage Prevention & Freight Claim Conference!

AARFor the 9th year in a row, Complete Packaging revisited the AAR conference held by Damage Prevention & Loading Services Team (DP&LS).

DP&LS conducts testing for railroads, shippers and suppliers in establishing industry accepted loading rules and standards. They are responsible for testing and publishing approved loading methods and materials for closed car shipments moving in boxcars and inter-modal equipment, as well as open top shipments.

This conference is dedicated to further the education of all rail shippers in an effort to reduce damage and freight claims across North America.

AAR Blog Photo 1

During the presentation of “Reaching the Mile High Goal through Communication, Education and Cooperation” Complete Packaging’s very own Darren Burden took some time to help cover some important issues on achieving company goals, along with a handful of other honoured speakers.

This presentation looked at how new load plans for 50 and 60 foot rail cars are being developed through communication, and cooperation and are being applied through Training and education.

The panel was a complete success, and we were overwhelmed with gratitude. A special thanks for a glowing testimonial from Chairman of the DP&FC:

… I greatly appreciated the time and effort you put into the annual Conference. You never go through the motions; you’re always “all in” … 110%!  Sincerely, thank you for helping making this Conference a success.  Take care …

Dave A. Hopkins – Director BNSF

Everyone at Complete Packaging Systems would like to thank Dave Hopkins for his leadership and guidance through this year’s AAR conference. We look forward to next year’s gathering in Montreal hosted by Canadian Pacific Railway.

Amendments to NSC Standard 10 Are Now Being Enforced!

In June of 2013, changes were proposed and implemented to the National Safety Code Standard 10, which governs over-the-road securement devices. In particular, we are focusing on the amendments to the WLL (Working Load Limit) of rubber friction mats.

Please note these important changes as per the National Safety Code Standard 10:

2. Devision 2 – General Performance Criteria: Friction Mats
 Current  Amendment
 Section 12 (9)

A friction mat which is not marked by the manufacturer with a working load limit is assumed to provide resistance to horizontal movement equal to 50% of the weight of the cargo resting on the mat.

 Section 12 (9)

To be considered part of a cargo securement system, a friction mat must be marked by its manufacturer with the maximum usable friction resistance (in g’s) the mat will provide in restraining cargo against horizontal and lateral movement.

Notes:

Eliminates default Working Load Limit for unmarked friction mats, as supported by CVSA Cargo Securement Public Forum and FMCSA

Assessment:

No major objections were received to this proposal.

The Canadian Trucking Alliance proposed that implementation of the requirement be introduced in January 2014 to allow the current inventory of unmarked friction mats to be consumed.

At the moment, these changes only effect Canadian shippers, although U.S shippers that are exporting to Canada must follow these regulations as well. We expect the U.S governing agencies will follow Canada’s lead, as it makes inferior products unusable and ultimately will lead to a more regulated industry.

See the Latest Railroad Safety Facts from the Federal Railroad Administration [Whitepaper]

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) released a great report about the state of railroad safety in the United States. The document, titled “Safety Fact Sheet”, discusses some good news!

Although railroads are carrying more goods and people than they have in a generation, the ten-year trend of accidents shows a definitive downward curve. Rail has never been safer – we’re seeing record-breaking levels of safety performance since 2008.

Here are some of the key stats:

  • 38% reduction in human factor caused accidents
  • 37% reduction in tract defects
  • 41% reduction in equipment defects

These are fantastic numbers for everyone involved in rail transport to celebrate.

Click here to download the Safety Fact Sheet from the FRA.

Of course, we must still work toward achieving ever-higher standards of safety on our railroads. Everyone plays a part in reaching that goal, from the FRA to the rail personnel unloading product.

If you ship goods via rail, using the proper cargo securement methods is paramount to safety. We know first-hand the importance of well-secured loads, particularly for heavy weight and high density loads such as paper rolls.

We encourage you to read the good news from the FRA, and think about ways you can improve safety in your own processes.
